On Thursday, the software company announced that the Copilot key will soon be available on new Windows-based PCs manufactured and sold by various companies. Microsoft declared that this marks the start of “the year of the AI PC.”

CoPilot Makes it Easy for PC Users

By clicking on a single button, PC users will soon be able to use Copilot – the AI-powered chatbot from the software giant – to ask questions or get help with drafting emails.

Yusuf Mehdi, the executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer at Microsoft, said, “This will not only simplify people’s computing experience but also amplify it, making 2024 the year of the AI PC. The new key will ultimately make it seamless to engage Copilot in your day to day. Copilot, notably, is propelled by OpenAI’s underlying technology after Microsoft’s $13 billion investment into the AI startup.”

Pressing the Copilot key will start Windows Search if Copilot is not activated on your device or is not yet available in your country.

The latest key on the Windows PC keyboard is the Copilot ribbon logo which is located on the lower right side of the keyboard, adjacent to the Space bar and Alt button. This is the first significant alteration to the Windows keyboard since the introduction of the Windows key in 1994. The Windows key was included in laptop and desktop keyboards produced by companies such as Dell, Lenovo, and HP.

Microsoft announced their move just before the upcoming CES tech convention. The event is expected to showcase a range of AI product updates from various companies. In the past year, Big Tech companies have been in a race to develop and integrate AI tools across their products.
