Racism certainly should not be welcome when it comes to access to health care. Despite this black mothers have to survive through and face racism. Being away from the required health care, maternal deaths have become a hot discussion in the US.
Over the course of two decades, maternal deaths throughout the US have more than doubled, and the tragedy unfolded equally.
The US has recorded the highest rates of deaths of black mothers, while the largest increases in deaths were found in Native Alaskan and American Indian mothers. And some states- and ethnic groups or racial groups within them- fared worse than others.
How did these findings get unearthed?
The findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Monday. Researchers examined maternal deaths in every state and five racial and ethnic groups between 1999 and 2019 — excluding the pandemic spike.
USA- One of Wealthiest Nations with Highest Maternal Mortality Rates
The United States has the highest rate of maternal mortality among wealthy countries, defined as death during childbirth or up to a year afterward. Excessive bleeding, heart disease, suicide, and drug overdose are all common causes.
Dr. Allison Bryant, one of the study’s authors and a senior medical director for health equity at Mass General Brigham, said, “It’s a call to action to all of us to understand the root causes — to understand that some of it is about health care and access to health care, but a lot of it is about structural racism and the policies and procedures and things that we have in place that may keep people from being healthy,”.
