Synopsis-

“the US Navy, said,  the U.S. Navy “has been impacted” by the cyberattacks, adding that it was “no surprise that China has been behaving in this manner, not just for the last couple years, but for decades.”

On Thursday, Microsoft disclosed that The U.S. navy has been attacked by the Chinese state-sponsored hack.

Carlos Del Toro, Secretary of the US Navy, said,  the U.S. Navy “has been impacted” by the cyberattacks, adding that it was “no surprise that China has been behaving in this manner, not just for the last couple years, but for decades.”

Del Toro refused to give further detail on the attack, but propounded that the Navy had been facing cyberattacks like this for years.

What did Microsoft do?

Microsoft, as well as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the National Security Agency, and the cybersecurity agencies of four other countries, issued a warning on Wednesday. The alerts informed corporations and government agencies that an expert Chinese state-backed hacking group had successfully utilised a vulnerability in a popular cybersecurity suite.

The loophole, which was attacked by a group codenamed “Volt Typhoon,” impacts critical cyber infrastructure across a wide range of industries. Microsoft mentioned that the Chinese hackers had attacked communications and maritime sectors in Guam, which is home to a key U.S. military base.

What was the target point of Chinese hackers?

According to Microsoft, the hacking group for Chinese cyber attacks seems to have been focused on surveillance rather than disruption. Top intelligence officials and researchers, however, expressed concern that Guam had been targeted by the Chinese cyber attacks, and the island region would be critical in preventing China’s long-feared invasion of Taiwan. Earlier on Thursday, a State Department representative stated that both the government and the public must remain vigilant. “We will continue to work with our allies and partners to take on this critical issue,” said spokesperson Matthew Miller at a press conference.
