Synopsis-
“A lowa judge temporarily blocked the state’s new restriction on most abortions which happen about six weeks of pregnancy, just a few days later lowa’s governor Kim Reynolds signed the measure into law.”
Abortion is legal in the United States, but the various restrictions enforced on the procedure vary greatly with regard to the laws of each state or other jurisdiction. Some states, with few exceptions, prohibit abortion at all stages of pregnancy, while others allow it up to a certain point in a woman’s pregnancy, and still others allow abortion all through a woman’s pregnancy.
In states where abortion is legal, there may be several types of restrictions on the procedure, such as parental approval or notification laws, standards that patients see an ultrasound before getting an abortion, required waiting periods, and counselling requirements.
What is the news?
A lowa judge temporarily blocked the state’s new restriction on most abortions which happen about six weeks of pregnancy, just a few days later lowa’s governor Kim Reynolds signed the measure into law. Lowa is a state in the upper Midwestern region of the USA.
This means abortion gets once again permissible in lowa up to 20 weeks of pregnancy till the court goes through the constitutionality of the new law.
The new law makes almost all abortions illegal once cardiac activity is detected, which is generally about six weeks of pregnancy prior to when many women realise they are pregnant.
The Ban Approved by Lowa’s Legislature Prompts A Legal Challenge
The measure was approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature in a rare all-day special session last week, causing a legal challenge by the ACLU of the state, Planned Parenthood North Central States, and the Emma Goldman Clinic. Judge Joseph Seidlin heard the case on Friday, but said he would take it under recommendation — just as Reynolds signed the bill into law about a mile away.
