Google Pays $1.7 Billion for Ai Chips Patent Infringement

Synopsis-

The day of the settlement negotiations was also the day the solicitors for both sides were supposed to present their closing arguments.”

Google has reached a $1.7 billion settlement in a lawsuit over the infringement of AI chip patents filed by computer scientist Joseph Bates and his company Singular, the company announced on Wednesday.

The day of the settlement negotiations was also the day the solicitors for both sides were supposed to present their closing arguments. The specifics of the settlement have not been made public, but according to reports, Google’s attorneys insist that there was no patent infringement of any kind by the internet behemoth against Bates or Singular.

Bates, who filed a lawsuit earlier this month, has asked for $1.67 billion from Google for using his innovations to develop processors for AI-related tasks.

Bate’s Lawsuit Frame Google for Duplicating Its AI Innovations

During the period of 2010 to 2014, Google met Bates multiple times to discuss ideas that later appeared in Google’s AI technology. Bates’ lawyers claimed that Google had duplicated his innovations.

Kerry Timbers, a lawyer, stated that Bates’ innovations were utilized in creating different versions of Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). These TPUs are fundamental in enabling all AI functions that are currently accessible through Google’s various services such as Google Search, Gmail, and Google Translate.

The proliferation of generative AI has led major tech companies to develop their own AI chips including Google, IBM, AWS, and Microsoft.

xResearch estimates that the global market for AI chips will be worth $14.9 billion in 2022 and will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40.5% to reach $227.6 billion by 2030.

But according to Google’s attorneys, its own employees and researchers created the AI chips.

The AI chip market is currently dominated by Nvidia, but there has also been investment from chip giants Intel and AMD.
